چکیده

Ideomotor theory of human action control proposes that activation of a motor representation can occur either through internally intended or externally perceived actions. Critically, sometimes these two ways of eliciting a motor response may be conflicting, for example when intending one action and perceiving another, necessitating the recruitment of enhanced action control processes to avoid motor mimicry. Based on previous evidence, suggesting that reduced motor mimicry is associated with self-related processing, we aimed at enhancing these action control mechanisms during motor contagion experimentally by an induction of self-focus. In two within-subjects experiments, participants had to enforce their action intention against an external motor contagion tendency, either under heightened or normal self-focus. As predicted, selffocus reduced motor mimicry under both induction methods. Our findings indicate that self-focus is able to enhance online action control mechanisms needed to resist unintentional motor contagion, thus enabling a modulation of automatic mirroring responses.

The antecedents and consequences of human behavioral mimicry.

Behavioral mimicry--the automatic imitation of gestures, postures, mannerisms, and other motor movements--is pervasive in human interactions. The current review focuses on two recent themes in the mimicry literature. First, an analysis of the moderators of mimicry uncovers the various motivational, social, emotional, and personality factors that lead to more or less mimicry of an interaction pa...

Learning to Sing Like a Bird: Self-Supervised Acquisition of Birdsong

This paper presents a new framework for self-supervised sensorimotor learning. We demonstrate this framework with a system that learns to mimic a zebra finch, directly modeled on the dynamics of how male fledglings acquire birdsong from their fathers. Our system first listens to the song of an adult finch. By listening to its own initially nascent attempts at mimicry through an articulatory syn...

Postural Stabilization Strategies to Motor Contagion Induced by Action Observation Are Impaired in Parkinson’s Disease

Postural reactions can be influenced by concomitant tasks or different contexts and are modulated by a higher order motor control. Recent studies investigated postural changes determined by motor contagion induced by action observation (chameleon effect) showing that observing a model in postural disequilibrium induces an increase in healthy subjects' body sway. Parkinson's disease (PD) is asso...

Sensorless Speed Control of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive Using the Binary Observer with Online Flux-Linkage Estimation

An adaptive online flux-linkage estimation method for the sensorless control of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive is presented in this paper. Sensorless operation is achieved through a binary observer based algorithm. In order to avoid using the look up tables of motor characteristics, which makes the system, depends on motor parameters, an adaptive identification algorithm is used to estim...

Rapid mimicry and emotional contagion in domestic dogs

Emotional contagion is a basic form of empathy that makes individuals able to experience others' emotions. In human and non-human primates, emotional contagion can be linked to facial mimicry, an automatic and fast response (less than 1 s) in which individuals involuntary mimic others' expressions. Here, we tested whether body (play bow, PBOW) and facial (relaxed open-mouth, ROM) rapid mimicry ...
